Coming to Shirley Mae's Café is like coming home to dinner. In a quaint little clay-brick building on the corner of Clay & Lampton Streets in downtown Louisville, KY, you'll find Shirley Mae in her cozy li'l kitchen creating a little slice of heaven... if Southern cuisine or soul food is what you crave. Each customer is given Shirley Mae's special attention as she fries, sautés and prepares many menu items to-order. In fact, Shirley Mae's Café is one of the few restaurants of its kind where the kitchen is wide open so that the customers can actually watch their food being prepared. And Shirley Mae always insists on fresh food... That's truly what makes Shirley Mae one-of-a-kind. "I don't like artificial anything," Shirley Mae once told Courier-Journal food critic Marty Rosen. "The way I cook takes some time, but cooking is a waste of time if you don't do it right." So, come on home for dinner to Shirley Mae's Café. We'll be waiting on you.

The food was delicious. I had chicken, cabbage and macaroni. Daisy was rude and told me I needed to eat the chicken that was there (fried in lard). She did not care that I don't eat pork. She told me we came from slavery and that's what our food is made of. She refused to cook more chicken and told me they don't do special stuff (I'm looking at their newspaper article where they claim to prepare non pork food for Muslims). Another worker was very polite and made my chicken and hot water cornbread in vegetable oil; I really appreciated it. Glad my meal worked out but I will not be returning.

Great Food. Amazing People. Love the history and authentic vibe. Famous people. Feels like your Grandma kitchen.

Shirley Mae's is one of 5 Louisville restaurants that, if it suddenly didn't exist, I might have to move! Seriously, Shirley makes THE best soul food. And it all happens in a friendly, well-loved setting in Smoketown that makes you feel like you're joining friends and family for Sunday dinner. Plus, everything is made to order, and you can watch it being prepared in the open kitchen. Wonderful food, setting, and at an excellent value. On my most recent visit, my spouse and I enjoyed the fried fish, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and hot water cornbread. For dessert, we snagged the last piece of blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream on top. Simply heaven!
